Provided are a speed change gear which facilitates taking countermeasures against frictional heat caused by friction engagement components being brought into sliding engagement with each other, and a speed change controller. The speed change gear includes an input member which is coupled to and driven by an internal combustion engine and a rotational electric machine; an output member coupled to a driven wheel to drive the same; and a speed change mechanism for changing the rotational speed of the input member at a speed change ratio of speed change stages formed according to the engagement state between a plurality of friction engagement components and transferring the resulting rotational speed to the output member. The speed change gear or the controller therefor is adapted such that a slipping running mode is provided in which a vehicle runs while torque is being transferred with one of the friction engagement components (B1, C1, ...) allowed to slip; and a slipping engagement component (B2) to be slipped in slipping running mode is engaged in common with a frontward start speed change stage (1st) and a backward start speed change stage (Rev1).
