The device has current-limiting resistors (5, 6) and a device for wireless transfer of data. A gas-filled surge arrester (3) stays in contactless connection with an armature (9) or coupling bar. The armature and/or the coupling bar are connected with an oscillating circuit, which comprises an inductor (10) and a capacitor (11). High frequency energy present in the oscillating circuit is converted into an evaluable signal. A state of the arrester is evaluated via acquisition of alterations of resonance frequency and bandwidth of a resonance circuit.
