<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an inexpensive and easily assembled rotary joint with a low rotational resistance, high flexibility in design, high sensitivity, and high stability. <P>SOLUTION: A rotary joint 5 includes: a fixed unit 2; a rotary unit 3 that rotates around a rotation axis CL1; a first signal transmission section 53 that transmits signal light from the rotary unit 3 to the fixed unit 2; and a second signal transmission section 55 that transmits signal light from the fixed unit 2 to the rotary unit 3. The first signal transmission section 53 includes: a first rotary side light emission section 34; a first rotary side reflection section 36; a first fixed side light receiving section 32; and a first light shielding member 29.
