1,252,209. Coated metal surfaces. LURIA BROS & CO. Inc. 24 July, 1969 [2 Aug., 1968], No. 37334/69. Heading B2E. [Also in Division C7] Ferrous material (such as low carbon scrap) with a ratio of 0.4 to 5 sq. ft. of surface area per lb wt. of material is provided with a tough adherent coating by applying an aqueous composition comprising sodium silicate (e.g. with a SiO 2 /Na 2 O ratio of 1.58-3.85) and a finely divided carburizing agent, which is coke or coal fines, a major proportion of which has a maximum particle size of 8 mesh (U.S.) followed by drying, the coating being sufficiently heavy to provide a C content of the treated material in the range 2 to 20%. The coated material is useful as an at least partial substitute for pig iron and cast iron scrap in the production of steel or cast iron in a cupola, arc furnace or induction furnace. The ferrous material may be prepared by treating suitable scrap in a hammer mill and the coating may be applied by dipping and draining or by tumbling the material in jets of the coating composition.
|
