This lighting system (1) comprises: an excitation light source (11); a phosphor unit (15) that converts the excitation light emitted by the excitation light source (11) into fluorescence and emits the fluorescence toward an object being illuminated; and a light source device (10) comprising the excitation light source (11) and the phosphor unit (15). The illumination system (1) also comprises a state recognition device (30) that recognizes the state of the light source device (10) based on the state of the phosphor unit (15) when connected to the light source device (10) and when the phosphor unit (15) is emitting the fluorescence.
