The firelighter comprises a non-combustible hollow body (1) having a cavity (2) and an opening (3), and an existing carrier substance (4) in the cavity. The opening has a self-contained lateral surface (5). The carrier substance: is impregnated with a liquid fuel (6) or consists of solid fire accelerants inserted from an exact fit into the cavity; is a substance enabling the gasification of the liquid fuel; and includes compressed ash, compacted sand or unslaked lime. An edge of the opening comprises alternating elevations and depressions. The hollow body consists of metal, glass or ceramic. An independent claim is included for a process for lighting combustible materials with a firelighter.
