<p>A hydrogen production apparatus which is provided an electrode pair consisting of a hydrogen electrode and an oxygen electrode, a dividing wall sandwiched between the hydrogen electrode and the oxygen electrode, and a tank that contains the electrode pair, the dividing wall and an aqueous solution of an electrolyte, and which generates hydrogen by electrolyzing the aqueous solution of an electrolyte by means of the electrode pair. The hydrogen production device is characterized in that the oxygen electrode contains an oxide or hydroxide of a metal and the specific surface area of the oxygen electrode is greater than that of the hydrogen electrode. With this configuration, hydrogen is generated at the hydrogen electrode through a reduction reaction of water and a charge and discharge reaction occurs at the oxygen electrode. Because it is thereby possible to maintain the potential at the oxygen electrode at a certain value or higher in the hydrogen production apparatus, it is possible to suppress deterioration of the electrodes caused by an oxidation reaction and it is possible to improve response to fluctuations in input power caused by using renewable energy and to improve reliability.</p> |
