The invention relates to a continuously variable transmission for vehicles, including those with hybrid propulsion systems. The invention is disclosed in two embodiments. In both embodiments, power passes from an engine (37) via a clutch (36) to an input shaft (1). From the input shaft (1) the power is divided into flows which pass through a differential mechanism (6), where the power flow is divided a first time, and also through differential mechanisms (7, 10), which together form a differential gear (8), where the power flow is divided a second time, and no more than 15% of the full power flows through electrical or hydrostatic energy-generating machines (3, 13), which form, together with the differential mechanism (6), a variable component. A matching planetary gear (18) makes it possible to match efficiently the rotation frequencies produced by the differential gear (8) without interrupting the flow of power. Furthermore, one of the four gears in the matching gear is a direct gear. In the first embodiment of the invention, the drive makes it possible to produce a total variation range of approximately 17 at an efficiency of at least 0.95. In the second embodiment, this range tends to infinity, i.e. the rotation frequency of the output shaft (35) starts from zero.
