<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To hold a cell gap without using a spherical spacer. <P>SOLUTION: A liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate and a second substrate 201 that faces the first substrate. The first substrate includes a pixel electrode, a thin film transistor, and a first alignment film provided over the pixel electrode. The second substrate 201 includes a color filter provided selectively, a plurality of gap holding members 220, and a second alignment film 230 provided covering the plurality of gap holding members 220. The gap holding members 220 are made of photosensitive resin. The gap holding members 220 are provided in a region provided with the color filter and a region not provided with the color filter.
