A light emitting device includes a light emitting element that includes a reflection layer formed on a substrate, a light emitting layer formed on the reflection layer, and a semi-reflection layer formed on the light emitting layer, so as to transmit a portion of light from the light emitting layer and to reflect a remaining portion of the light. The light emitting element is configured as an optical resonator that causes a portion of the light outputted from the light emitting layer travelling at a predetermined angle &thetas;, larger than 0 degrees with respect to a direction perpendicular to the reflection layer, to resonate between the reflection layer and the semi-reflection layer and extracts the light from the side of the semi-reflection layer.
