The absorber has braking elements (5a, 5b) serving as friction brakes and acting on a brake cable (7) to brake fall of a person (P) to be secured. Braking effect of the braking elements is adjusted over a deflection angle, which deflects the braking elements by the brake cable. The deflection angle is continuously adjusted in discrete steps, and the braking elements comprise a spherical contour. A perforated plate is provided with openings, and the brake cable is guided through the openings. The deflection angle is continuously changed by an adjusting screw (4).
