Provided is an image encoding method which can alter the precision applied to movement information, such as a motion vector, with greater flexibility. This image encoding method uses movement information, showing the motion of an image, to encode an image, and includes: an evaluation step (S151) wherein the reliability of movement information is evaluated; an adjustment step (S152) wherein the precision applied to the movement information is adjusted on the basis of the evaluated reliability; and an encoding step (S153) wherein movement information expressed in terms of the adjusted precision is used to encode an image, and the movement information expressed in terms of the adjusted precision is encoded.
