A papermaking machine has an inner wire and an outer wire both wrapping a rotatable cylinder, the outer wire partly wrapping the portion of the cylinder wrapped by the inner wire, these wires leaving the cylinder tangentially, and continuing over a dewatering zone in a straight course, one of the wires being removed at a line transverse to the direction of motion, tension rolls being arranged within both wire loops and a headbox arranged to deliver stock between the wires. Either the inner or the outer wire may be removed at the transverse line, e.g. by a roll located along the line, leaving the other wire, and the web, travelling in a straight course. The dewatering zone may comprise one or more suction boxes, and lies within the loop of the wire which does not change direction at the line, preferably extending beyond the transverse line. The shell of the cylinder may be perforated, and contain suction units, or may be solid, with recesses or grooves. Savealls may be provided within one or both wire loops.
