[Also in Division B1] Material to be plasticized is forced through an annular passageway 48, 53 between a rotor 27 and a housing 16, the rotor having a portion 41 where frictional heat is developed between the rotor and the material and another portion 42 where frictional heat is developed between the housing 16 and the material. Material supplied through an opening 21 (Figs. 1, 2, not shown) is forced to the left in Fig. 3 by a ram (22) or screw operating in an opening 17. The portion 42 of the rotor comprises either one or a series of circumferentially and axially spaced lugs 57, 58, 59 each having an upstanding rib 63 to constrain the material to rotate with the rotor. The portion 42 may be cylindrical or slightly frusto-conical in shape. The plasticized material may be fed to an injection moulding machine through an outlet 38. The rotor also has a bearing portion 43 having ribs 66 and grooves 67.
