Hydride is prepd. from a Mg alloy contg. a rare earth metal or Th by using the alloy as anode in an electrolytic bath of one or more molten mineral salts inert relative to the alloy, and introducing hydrogen into the salt. Pref. the molten salt is maintained at 380-500 degrees C. The salt consists of a eutectic mixt. of LiCl and KCl. The hydrogen is introduced in the form of a soluble hydride, pref. CaH2, NaH or LiH. Gives castings more easily worked by plastic deformation. The method avoids the danger of an explosion due to the presence of hydrogen.
|
