Provided is a drying unit for drying solid fuel containing water with which low energy-consuming, efficient drying is possible by effectively using the sensible heat and latent heat of a heating medium for drying, and the like. A drying unit (10) for drying solid fuel containing water comprises a dryer (2) for introducing scavenging gas to inside a drying vessel (21) having heating tubes (22) arranged therein; a dust collecting unit (13) for removing microparticles from a microparticle-containing mixed gas current that flows out from the dryer vessel (21); a compressor (30) for compressing a mixed gas current containing steam; a steam heat exchanger (31) for preheating the low-pressure mixed gas current using the high-pressure mixed gas current that has been compressed by the comperessor (30); and a gas-liquid separating unlit (14) for gas-liquid separation of the scavenging gas containing water, which is obtained when the high-pressure mixed gas current passes through the heating tubes (22) to become drying gas that releases heat and then flows out from the heating tubes (22) containing the water of condensation from the steam that was generated when heat was released. Solid fuel containing water is heated and dried inside the drying vessel (21) using the latent heat and the sensible heat of the mixed gas current.
