A fuel reforming method of an internal combustion engine capable of reforming fuel and capable of reducing energy employed at the time of fuel reforming though it has a simple equipment configuration is provided. In the method, fuel is supplied to a reforming catalyst (4) provided on an exhaust path (3) so that the fuel is reformed to a reforming gas, comprising: a discharging step (S15) in which fuel supplied into a cylinder (2) and whose temperature is increased by a compression process is discharged by opening an exhaust valve (7) before the fuel is burnt and a reforming step (S15) in which the discharged fuel is introduced to the reforming catalyst (4).
