Methods are described for manufacturing an axle spindle and wheel end assembly which includes a precision-formed axle spindle, wheel hub (120), and axle spindle nut (204). The axle spindle (108) is formed with parallel inboard and outboard bearing surfaces (132, 134), a shoulder (120) that is perpendicular to the inboard and outboard bearing surfaces, and threads (116) for the spindle nut that are aligned with the inboard and outboard bearing surfaces. The wheel hub (120) is formed with inboard and outboard bearing surfaces (124, 126) that are in parallel alignment with one another, and bearing axial stop surfaces (128, 130) that are perpendicular to the wheel hub bearing surfaces. The spindle nut (204) is formed with threads (220) on its inner periphery and a flat inboard surface (212) that is perpendicular to the threads. The spindle, hub and nut cooperate to enable a consistent light preload on the bearing group. Precision forming is achieved using single-chuck processes or common reference surfaces for the aligned surfaces or threads of the respective components. |
