Polymers of one or more olefins are made by effecting the polymerization in the presence of a catalyst comprising (a) silicon or a metal of Group IV, V or VI of the Periodic Table, or a hydride, or an organometallic compound of silicon or a metal of Group IV, V or VI, (b) a compound of the formula M(OR)nXm, where M is Ti, Zr or V, R is a hydrocarbon radical, X is a halogen atom, and n and m are integers, n + m equal the valency of M, and (c) a halide of an element of Group III or V. Compound (b) may be synthesized directly from a halide of Ti, Zr or V, and an alkoxide of the same metal, in the vessel in which the catalyst is made, or used in the form of a complex of the formula M(OR)nXm.ROH, by reacting a compound of the formula ROH with a halide of Ti, Zr or V. Exemplified catalysts are tetrabutyl tin, AlCl3 and TiCl2(OC2H5)2 or TiCl3(OC2H5), or TiCl3(OC2H5)3.C2H5OH, or alkoxy titanium halide prepared from TiCl4 and tetrabutoxy, tetraisopropoxy or tetraethoxytitanium or TiCl4 reacted with C2H5OH, C4H9OH or C11H23. Exemplified monomers are ethylene, and a mixture of ethylene and propylene. The catalyst is preferably prepared in the absence of solvents, and the polymerization effected in hexane. |
