Metal plating of surfaces which are not necessarily electrically conductive or where a resilient layer is required between the coating and the substrate includes the step, prior to plating, of spraying the substrate with a curable or otherwise settable organic coating such as synthetic rubber, in an appropriate solvent, e.g. methyl ethyl ketone, the organic coating material solvent spray mix being ball-milled for a plurality of hours before spraying, the liquid contents of the spray mix being at least 25% by weight prior to ball milling. The organic coating may include therein carbon black. The present method may be applied to coating of hovercraft propeller blades. Prior to application of the organic coating the blade may be etched with phosphoric acid or zinc coated, or may be formed of a fibre glass moulding, which is lightly abraded before coating. The final coating may be of nickel, or of copper followed by nickel and may be produced by electro-plating. |
