The switching device has a rotatable and axially slidable selector and switching actuator mounted in a housing.Switching lanes (2,3,4,5) of the switching device are selected by rotating the actuator over a selecting lane (1). The gear ratio of the switching device is adjustable by following axial switching of the actuator. A movable arrester is arranged in the area of a ramp. The arrester is ararnged outside the selecting lane in an initial position and projects in the selecting lane in the area of a switching lane in a displacement position.
