1326807 Dehydrochlorination and hydro- Chlorination FMC CORP 18 Dec 1970 [18 Dec 1969] 60267/70 Heading C2C Methyl chloroform is prepared by dehydrochlorinating 1,1,2-trichloroethane at 300‹ to 500‹ C. in the presence of sodium chloride crystals to form a mixture of hydrogen chloride, vinylidene chloride and cis- and trans-diohloroethylenes, and feeding the mixture into a suspension of a hydrochlorination catalyst in a solvent below 75‹ C. to obtain methyl chloroform and 1,1,2-trichloroethane, the latter being preferably recycled. The specified dehydrochlorination catalyst is rock salt and the specified hydrochlorination catalyst is ferric chloride. Dehydrochlorination is preferably effected in the presence of less than 1 mole per cent of chlorine. |
