A spool valve for use in a vehicle power steering mechanism comprises a pair of grooved pistons 9, 10 slidable on a rod 8 which is, in turn, slidable relative to housing 5 by the steering shaft (not shown). In operation, with rod 8 in the neutral position illustrated, fluid admitted through inlet 18 forces the pistons apart and flows between the piston 10 and the rod 8 back to reservoir. Movement of rod 8 in either direction moves one piston towards the other so closing the gap and directing fluid to one end of motor 7. In a modification (not shown) a spring is provided to urge the pistons apart. |
