A gas-blast switch, has separable main contacts 25, 35, a piston 50 movable by the contactoperating mechanism for forcing the gas at the lower side of the piston through an orifice 65 to extinguish an arc 63 drawn between the main contacts, and auxiliary contacts 54, 61, in series with the contacts 25, 35, but disposed at the other side of the piston 50 so that arcs 64 between the contacts 54, 61 generate pressure to assist in moving the piston against the pressure generated by the arc 63. The movable auxiliary bridging contacts 54 are carried by the piston 50 which is moved by insulating rods (not shown) extending from a contact-operating yoke 36 secured to the moving contact-carrying tube 33. |
