Post driver safety shield whose height is controlled by the post cap which is selectively carried by the monkey

A safety shield raising mechanism for a post driver is disclosed. The postdriver is of a kind having a mast guided hammer and a mast guided post cap selectively carried or not carried upwards with the monkey. The position of the safety shield can be controlled as to its height by the post cap. When an operator moves a latching handle (39), which extends outside of the periphery of the cage, it enables an inter-engagement between the post cap and hammer so that when the post cap is lifted by the hammer the safety shield also lifts. The invention provides a postdriver which has a safety enhancement in that it denies the operator the opportunity to access the impact zone during the driving of a post since at this time the post cap remains on the post to be struck by the hammer.
