Disclosed is a lipid nanoparticlc composition comprising a neutral retinoid and a lipid component, wherein (a) the retinoid is dispersed in nanoparticles having diameters of less than or equal to about 1000 nm; (b) the final concentration of the retinoid is between about 4 and about 75 mg/ml. (e) the lipid component excludes any cholesterol or animal-derived lecithin and is (i) a plant-derived lecithin acceptable for use in mammals in vivo; or (ii) phospholipids of said lecithin of (i); or (iii) cholic acid or a salt thereof and one or more synthetic, chemically-defined phospholipids having two fatty acid chains; or (iv) one or more synthetic chemically-defined phospholipids having two fatty acid chains wherein the nanoparticles have a surface charge characterized by a zeta potential of between about -50 millivolts to about + 11 millivolts; and which composition is free of non- ionic surfactants, detergents, polyoxylated compounds, alkoxylated oils or any animal-derived substance known to be allergenic or to induce an anaphylactic reaction when administered to a human
