Provided is a DNA plasmid comprising a kanamycin resistance gene comprising a kanamycin resistance gene promoter wherein (a) the kanamycin resistance gene promoter consists of a specified sequence and optionally other specified sequence and a transcription terminator, wherein the expression of the kanamycin resistance gene is decreased in said DNA plasmid as compared to expression of the kanamycin resistance gene in the plasmid pVRI012. Further provided are corresponding methods of eliciting immune responses in non-human animals using the plasmids.
