The ring (1) has a combustion chamber facing to an upper ring edge (4), where the ring is made of cast steel or nodular cast iron. An oil space is turned to a lower flank surface (5) and a shock region (6). A pressure-intensive region of a radial outer running surface (2) is provided with hemispherical shaped recesses (7) along circumferential direction, where a hard-wearing material (8) is introduced into the recesses. The hard-wearing material is formed by a physical vapour deposition (PVD) layer based on chromium nitride with oxygen.
