摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ultrahard polycrystalline boron carbide material and a method for manufacturing the same. <P>SOLUTION: This polycrystalline B<SB POS="POST">4</SB>C material can be manufactured by a ferromagnetic field alignment technique and sintering. The c-axes of the B<SB POS="POST">4</SB>C are highly oriented perpendicularly to an applied magnetic field. Hardnesses measured on surfaces perpendicular/parallel to the c-axes are 38.86&plusmn;2.13 GPa and 31.31&plusmn;0.79 GPa, respectively. Application areas of the B<SB POS="POST">4</SB>C material are extended by these large values of hardnesses and large values of modulus of elasticity and fracture toughness. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT
