<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle detection apparatus with high installation freedom of a camera and excellent accuracy in detection. <P>SOLUTION: According to the embodiment, the vehicle detection apparatus includes line segment extraction means, candidate creation means, evaluation means, and specific part detection means. The line segment extraction means extracts a plurality of line segment components constituting an image of a vehicle from the photographed image of the vehicle. The candidate creation means conducts polygonal approximation configured to create a closed loop by using a plurality of line segment components to create a plurality of candidates for an area of a specific part of the vehicle. The evaluation means conducts a plurality of different evaluations for each of the plurality of candidates.
