Means for inspecting pipes are proposed which can be rotatably mounted on means of movement designed to be capable of traveling inside a pipe, and which comprise at least a first and a second acoustic receiving and emitting unit. The first of the aforesaid units is designed to be capable of exciting and receiving transverse ultrasonic waves propagated in a direction perpendicular to the surface of the pipe, and the second of the aforesaid units is designed to be capable of exciting and receiving transverse ultrasonic waves propagated in a direction that forms an acute angle with the normal to the surface of the pipe. The use of acoustic waves propagated in two directions to inspect pipes makes it possible to increase the reliability of detecting defects and also provides for the possibility of determining the type of defect detected.
