The present invention relates to anti-inflammatory activity which constitutes a novel use for ramalin isolated from the Antarctic lichen Ramalina terebrata, and more specifically relates to a pharmaceutical composition comprising ramalin as an active ingredient. The ramalin of the present invention is a substance derived from a natural material and has no toxicity or side effects, and compositions containing the same can not only fundamentally treat and prevent inflammatory diseases or immune diseases but can also be used to advantage in the alleviation and improvement of symptoms, since the ramalin of the present invention has an outstanding anti-inflammatory effect which is expressed as a result of its suppressing the expression of iNOS (nitric oxide synthase) in the transcription stage and so markedly suppressing the generation of NO (nitric oxide) which is a core mediating substance in inflammatory reactions, and its suppressing the activation of NF-?B which is an inflammatory mediator precursor, suppressing p38 MAPK, ERK1/2 and JNK signal transmission pathways and also suppressing the expression of TLR4 which is an LPS receptor.
