A method of connecting plates in a torque converter (101) including: forming a head of a rivet (108) with an end surface (116) that is curved or forms multiple planes; forming a portion of an interior surface (120) of the cover (102) to protrude or indent with respect to a surrounding portion (122) of the interior surface; disposing the body of the rivet in respective holes (124, 126) in respective portions (128, 130) of the plates (104, 106); and displacing the plates such that the end surface of the rivet head contacts the portion of the interior surface, the respective portions of the first and second plates are at an acute angle (134) with respect to the surrounding portion of the interior surface, and a longitudinal axis (2) of the rivet is at an acute angle (136) with respect to a line orthogonal to the surrounding portion of the interior surface.
