PURPOSE: A method and an apparatus for the gasification of an underground coal layer using microwaves are provided to pyrolyze coal using microwave energy having selective heating properties and a minimum oxidizing agent. CONSTITUTION: A method for the gasification of an underground coal layer using microwaves is as follows. One or more microwaves are supplied to an underground coal layer or dummy(12). An oxidizing agent is supplied to the underground coal layer or dummy. Gas produced from the underground coal layer or dummy is collected through the supplied microwaves.
