Provided is a portable terminal with which it is possible to properly use applications developed for other portable terminals with different screen display mode switch controls. In an application unit (15), the relation between operation and orientation is predetermined according to display mode, said relation being a correspondence between the operation of said application unit (15) and orientation information which denotes the orientation of a portable terminal (1). A control unit (14) displays a window on a display (11) in a display mode corresponding to the detection result of an orientation sensor (13) which detects the orientation of the portable terminal (1). A conversion unit (16) converts the detection result of the orientation sensor (13) according to conversion rules defined according to the relation between operation and orientation and inputs same into the application unit (15) in the form of the orientation information. The application unit (15) operates according to the orientation information inputted thereto and the relation between operation and orientation.
