A converter unit (2) is provided with three sets, each set consisting of two switching elements (Srp,..., Stn) connected serially, between two DC link sections (L1, L2), and each of the phases of an input three-phase alternate current is connected to each of the connection nodes of the serial connections. Each of the switching elements (Srp,..., Stn) is composed of a transistor comprising a bipolar construction. A control unit (5) controls each of the switching elements (Srp,..., Stn) so that line voltages between a basis phase and the other phases are output to the two DC link sections (L1, L2), in time division, assuming one phase of the input three-phase alternate current to be the basis phase. The control unit (5) applies a prescribed gate voltage to switching elements, among the switching elements (Srp,..., Stn), that have reverse bias applied thereto. |
