Cold spots on steel blooms and slabs are avoided by placing the skids of a pusher-type re-heating furnace at a small angle to the axis of the furnace so that the point of support for the stock continually changes during its passage through the furnace. The skids are trapezoidal in section with the top support surface twice as wide as the base, which is approximately 1/4 of the height. The skids are mounted in brackets on the furnace cooling tubes, the width of each being several times the bottom width of the skid. Cold spots are practically impossible, even at high rates of throughput, and there is no need for a soaking zone near the discharge end of the furnace. |
