<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a two-dimensional photonic crystal surface-emitting laser easily enabling laser oscillation having a two-dimensionally symmetric intensity distribution under a configuration using a photonic crystal of a lattice structure with different lengths of primitive translation vectors in plane. <P>SOLUTION: The two-dimensional photonic crystal surface-emitting laser includes an active layer, and a two-dimensional photonic crystal having a two-dimensionally periodic refractive index distribution disposed in the vicinity of the active layer. The two-dimensional photonic crystal has a lattice structure with different lengths of two primitive translation vectors in plane. The shape of a member constituting lattice points included in a unit lattice of the lattice structure has anisotropy with respect to the directions of the two primitive translation vectors. The anisotropy of the shape of the member constituting the lattice points decreases the difference in coupling coefficients, compared to when the shape of the member constituting the lattice points is isotropic. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT |
