The title cpds. are of formula (I): (where X is O, S, SO, or SO2; Z is CHR1 or C=R2; R2 is H or alkyl (1-4C st. or branched); R2 is alkylidene (1-4C st. or branched); Hal is Br, Cl or F; R3 and R4 = H or together complete a dioxolane ring: and P and Q = 1-5C alkyl) and are prepd. by the reaction of a glycerol ketonide with a heterocyclyl phenyl acetyl halide followed, if desired, by acid hydrolysis of the ketonide gp.
