1,150,535. Polymerization catalysts for isoprene. GOODRICH-GULF CHEMICALS Inc. 18 Jan., 1968 [3 Nov., 1967], No. 2878/68. Heading C3P. A catalyst system for the polymerization of isoprene comprises admixing a titanium halide, an aluminium hydrocarbyl compound and an ether of the formula R 1 -O-R 2 , wherein R 1 and R 2 are alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkenyl, or aryl radicals containing from 2 to about 20 carbon atoms, at a temperature below 0‹ C., and aging the resulting catalyst for at least two hours at temperatures between - 40‹ and 0‹ C. If desired, the catalyst may be stored at about -25‹ C. The catalyst is used to polymerize isoprene, which has been further purified and dried. The polymerization is preferably effected batchwise at a temperature of - 50‹ C. to +70‹ C., in the presence of a hydrocarbon solvent or diluent. Exemplified catalysts are (1) TiCl 4 , #-Bu 3 Al, n-Bu 2 O, (Bu=butyl), (2) TiCl 4. #-Bu 3 Al, 1-Bu 2 AlI, and n-Bu 2 O, (3) TiCl 4 , #-Bu 2 AlH, n-Bu 2 O, (4) TiCl 4 , triethyl Al, n-Bu 2 O, (5) TiCl 4 , #-Bu 3 Al, C 2 H 5 -O-phenyl, (6) TiCl 4 , #-Bu 3 Al, and (phenyl) 2 O, and (7) TiCl 4 , #-Bu 3 Al and (C 2 H 5 ) 2 O.
