The surgical instrument (10) has handle portion (11), mounting portion and a functional portion and/or tip (19). A display device (13) is provided on the instrument, to display symbols or characters. The display device enables displays to assist the image guided and/or navigation assisted surgery. An independent claim is included for surgical instrument navigation method.
