METHODS FOR PRETREATING BIOMASS

A system for treating lignocellulosic biomass, comprising (a) a reaction vessel containing the lignocellulosic biomass and (b) a supply being in connection with the reaction vessel for the delivery of gaseous ammonia or of a mixture of gaseous ammonia and a carrier at an elevated temperature to the reaction vessel, wherein the system is configured to maintain the content of the reaction vessel under pressure, to allow for no expansive release of pressure, and to allow the gaseous ammonia to react with water present in the biomass to produce a treated biomass.
