[Also in Division C3] Fibrous materials or polymeric films are coloured by treating with a solution or suspension of anthraquinone dyes containing at least one aryloxy or arylamino residue and at least two groups of the formula I in which R 1 , R 2 and R 3 each independantly represents a hydrogen atom or a methyl group P is -O-, -N(R 4 )- or -N(R 4 ) N(R 5 )- in which cases Q represents a direct linkage or a linkage of formula -CO-, -COO-, -CONH-, or -CSNH-, or P is -CO- in which case Q is -O-, -S-, or -N(R 4 ) wherein each R 4 and R 5 independantly represents hydrogen or an optionally substituted lower C 1-4 alkyl group; Y is an optionally substituted alkylene radical, n is zero or 1, the treatment being carried out in conjunction with a polymerisation catalyst which may be applied before, after or simultaneously with the dyestuff. Preferably 2-4 of the groups above are present in the dyestuff which may also have one or two sulphonic acid groups. The polymerisation catalyst may be present as 1-500% by weight of the dye used, also other copolymerisable monomers may be present, e.g.α- olefins and vinyl compounds. Substrates to be dyed include cotton, wool, silk, nylon 6, nylon 66, aromatic polyesters, cellulose acetate, polyurethane and modified or unmodified polyacrylonitrile. Polymerisation catalysts include free radical generating agents, peroxides, azo compounds, redox systems, X-rays, gamma rays, electron beams and ultra violet light.
