A wheelchair 10 comprises a seat base 12 and a single front stem 14 rigidly attached and forming a frame which is L-shape when viewed from the side. It is a self-supporting monocoque construction moulded from carbon fibre cloth impregnated with resin. The seat 12 is supported by main wheels 18 and front wheels 20 which are mounted on the front stem 14 and footrest 16. The wheels 18 have ceramic bearings and may be mounted on an axle with a frictionless bushing. The seat 12 has a seatback 22 connected by an adjustable hinge 24. The structure supports lights or LEDs at key positions. The wheelchair 10 is water resistant and/or waterproof. There is also described a method of manufacturing a wheelchair comprising forming the front stem, forming the seat base and bonding the front stem to the base. |
