A myrcene-(iron tricarbonyl) complex and myrcene - derivatives therefrom

Complex (I) (CH3)2C=CH-CH2-CH2-C(=CH2)-CH=CH2.Fe-(CO)3 may be obtained by heating myrcene and iron pentacarbonyl in a high-boiling solvent, e.g. dibutyl ether. When commercial myrcene is used, formation of the complex and its subsequent decomposition may be used as a method of purifying myrcene. The conjugated bonds of myrcene are protected in (I), and the isolated double bond can undergo selective reaction to produce products useful in perfumes.
