Flat articles such as signatures are fed in a stack 25, Fig. 1, on edge by a conveyer 11 and back plate 12 against a pivoted feeder plate 22 which pivots clockwise to bring the top edges of the foremost articles past a microscope 14 and photo-cell 16 while illuminated by means 13, the photo-cell operating a counter which, when a required number of articles have passed, causes a separator finger 19, Fig. 5, to drop into the stack, Fig. 4. A jaw 23 of a transfer arm 24 moves outwards to a position where, when the arm moves counter-clockwise, the jaw is adjacent the finger 19, and a second jaw 20 moves outwards to clamp the counted batch, the arm then rotating clockwise to draw the batch between guides 26 to a remote location. The arm then returns to its initial position. As the plate 22 moves clockwise, the conveyer is raised by a cam 154 to keep the articles a constant distance from the microscope. Air is emitted through holes in the plate 22 against the front article to facilitate transfer. The distance between articles being counted is increased by air from a nozzle 21. As the plate 22 moves clockwise, a microswitch associated therewith is actuated to open a clutch and activate a brake to stop the conveyer. After transfer, the conveyer is restarted only when signals are received from the switch when the plate 22 is restored, from the arm 24 when restored, and from the counter to indicate the number of articles to be counted. |
