(i) a compound of the formula where R is alkyl of 1-5 carbon atoms, R<SP>1</SP> is H or alkyl of 1-5 carbon atoms and X is halogen, (ii) an organic compound with one or more -OH, -COOH or -SH groups capable of forming a hydrohalic acid during the reaction with (i), and (iii) at least one alkylene oxide. The invention further comprises compounds of the formula where R 1 <SP>1</SP> and R are alkyl of 1-5 carbon atoms and A is the residue remaining after hydrohalic acid formation with starting material (i) of a compound selected from an alkoxylation product of a polyol, a polyoxyalkylene glycol, an alkoxylation product of a carboxylic acid or mercaptan having at least 10 carbon atoms or an alkoxylation product of a vegetable or mineral oil. |
