PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for distinguishing the characteristic of insects are provided to distinguish the characteristic of the insects with respect to light according to the wavelength, the amount, or the irradiating time of light. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for distinguishing the characteristic of insects includes a main body(10), a light source part(20), and a controller(30). The main body is composed of one or more transparent elements which receive light from the outside. The light source part irradiates light to the main body. The controller controls the characteristic of the light irradiated from the light source part. The controlling controls the amount, the wavelength, or the irradiated time of the light. The light source part includes one or more light emitting diodes or fluorescent lamps.
