PURPOSE: A medium diverter device is provided to reduce torque for rotating a gate by reducing weight in a tip of the gate. CONSTITUTION: A medium diverter device comprises first and second paths, duplex paths(D,C), and a multi-mode diverter. The first path orients simplex and duplex media(6,7) to an output position. The second path orients the simplex medium to an inverter. The duplex paths orient the simplex medium inverted to receive an image on the surface where the image is not formed. In a first mode, the multi-mode diverter receives the simplex medium from the first path, orients the simplex medium to the output position, and orients the diverted simplex medium to the duplex paths. In a second mode, the multi-mode diverter orients the simplex medium to the inverter.
