PURPOSE: A digital capturing apparatus and control method thereof are provided to determine the effectiveness of a contrast peak value in an AF(Automatic Focusing) area by comparing the brightness value of the AF area with a surrounding area. CONSTITUTION: An AF area establishment unit(210) establishes an AF area. A brightness detection area setting unit(220) establishes a brightness detection area. A brightness calculation unit(230) calculates a brightness value for the AF area and the brightness detection area. A determination unit(240) calculates a difference value between the brightness value of the brightness detection area and the AF area. The determination unit determines the effectiveness of an AF evaluation value for the AF area according to the difference value.
